The Clare senior hurling and camogie panels presented “Strictly Come Dancing” on Friday April 11 in the West County Hotel and sure enough with an event of this stature, the dancing along with the style and fashion were a major focal point.
The Clare hurlers costumes didn’t exactly leave much to the imagination of the audience as Conor Ryan, Podge Collins, Davy O’Halloran and Bobby Duggan danced half naked around the dance floor (probably the highlight of the night for most people).
Today FM presenter Mairead Farrell, RTE’s Marty Morrissey, Galway camogie All-Star Veronica Curtin and the fabulous local Nigel Bridge were the evening’s adjudicators and did not hold back in their comments to the dancers.
Eventually Cratloe man Podge Collins and Sixmilebridge starlet Rachael O’Halloran were crowned winners of Strictly Come Dancing 2014 after they accomplished the iconic “Dirty Dancing” lift where Patrick Swayze lifts Jennifer Grey in the movies climax to absolute perfection.
The technical ability of the male dancers in particular surprised me completely, their flawless execution of such technical steps and their overall stage presence were fantastic. So, if all else fails this year with regard to hurling perhaps they could take up professional dancing.
Although the dancers were proficient in their performances on their night some of the fashion choices can be questioned; All-Ireland winning U/21 captain Paul Flangan’s shiny silver shirt wasn’t exactly flattering but Truagh/Clonlara’s Ellen Horgan pink flapper dress really caught the eye.
Local dance school Sparks Hip Hop Dance were the interval act and as always wowed the crowd with their charismatic performance (not being biased or anything)
